My first animals
My
first dogs
I was around 20 years old, in 1984, when I had my first dog. I
lived in Turin, Italy at the time. Actually, I didn’t only
have a dog, I was lucky enough to have three dogs, 2 German shepherd
and a mixed breed.
As a child, I had always wanted to have a dog, but my parents
were not interested, so I was very pleased when I finally had
the opportunity to have dogs as a part of my family.
I was so enthusiastic about animals that my parents allowed me
to keep a small turtle, a parrot and a cat during my youth.
I think my children can consider themselves lucky for being brought
up among dogs. They have learnt from dogs some things that are
not taught in school.
Ricco
Senior (German shepherd)
Ricco
was a big and beautiful German shepherd. He was a good guardian,
and at the same time a wonderful family dog.
Ricco lived outside
the house, in the garden, as usual in Italian quarters of detached
houses. He watched over the house and us, people living there
and would bark when someone approached the garden.
Unfortunately, Ricco suffered from severe hip dysplasia and
was put to sleep when he was 5 years old.
Ricco
Junior (German shepherd)

Ricco
Junior “on duty” as a guardian dog. In the right corner,
Cero rests.
We missed Ricco Senior very much and decided to have another German
shepherd as soon as possible.
We got a puppy from the same breeder, and called the new puppy
Ricco, in memory of the dog we lost.
It took me a while to learn to appreciate the new dog. I compared
him with old Ricco, and he didn’t stand up to my expectations.
Now, I realize that I wanted him to be the old dog, which of course
was both stupid and unfair on the dog.
The day arrived when I accepted the fact that Ricco Junior was
another individual and from then on I loved him just as much as
the old one.
Cero
(mixed breed)
Cero
at old age. During his 17 years of life, he mated several pure
bred bitches in our neighbourhood, and for that reason, was not
the most popular in town.
My white and brown mixed breed dog, Cero, was a very sweet tempered
dog. He was useless as a guarding dog, but a fantastic family
dog.
He lived for 17 years and became a father of several puppies in
Turin during his lifetime. His nose was extremely sensitive when
bitches were in heat and he would travel around the city to mate
them.
Of course he should have been neutered, but the “Capo famiglia”
disliked the idea, and as a consequence Cero was probably the
most disliked dog in Turin among bitch owners.
